The Courses

IB English Language & Literature and Literature

IB English offers two distinct courses — Language & Literature and Literature — each at HL and SL. The two courses assess different things and need different preparation. Tutoring is built around the course and level you are actually studying.

IB English is not a single course. Students take either English A: Language & Literature or English A: Literature, each at Higher Level (HL) or Standard Level (SL). The two courses share a focus on close textual analysis and constructed argument, but they differ in the range of texts they study and what their assessments emphasise.

Language & Literature works with both literary and non-literary texts, so students analyse how language creates meaning across genres, media and contexts. Literature focuses on literary works, with attention to how writers construct meaning through form, style and technique. Tutoring needs differ depending on the course, because the skills and texts are not interchangeable.

HL covers more texts and demands greater depth, range and sophistication than SL, but SL is not simply an easier version — it has its own assessment demands. Neither is universally harder; each suits different goals, and tutoring is built around the course and level you are actually studying.

English A: Language & Literature

English A: Literature

What We Help With

What IB English Tutoring Can Help With

English tutoring targets the skills the course actually rewards — close analysis, constructed argument, evidence and precision — rather than memorised interpretations.

Close Textual Analysis

Analyse how language, form, structure and stylistic choices create meaning, and distinguish analytical commentary from description of what a text says.

Paper 1

Support planning, analysis, organisation and writing under time pressure for unseen text analysis.

Paper 2

Develop comparative argumentation and evidence-based analysis across the works you have studied, where applicable to your course.

Individual Oral

Develop a clear global issue, an analytical line and an effective oral structure, while preserving student ownership of the work.

Essay Writing

Build thesis, argument, paragraph structure and the precise use of evidence so analysis drives the response rather than plot summary.

Exam Technique

Use command terms correctly, manage time across the paper and structure responses to the type of question being asked.

Common Problems

Where IB English Students Often Struggle

These are recurring areas students bring to tutoring. They are not presented as the most common in any statistical sense, only as genuinely useful things to look out for.

Descriptive instead of analytical writing
Weak thesis that does not establish a clear line of argument
Weak line of argument across a response
Embedding evidence smoothly into analysis
Linking evidence to analysis rather than dropping quotations
Discussing effect without explaining how it is created
Structuring comparative responses for Paper 2
Time management under exam conditions
Over-reliance on memorised interpretations
Difficulty articulating an original argument
Our Approach

How We Teach IB English

A four-stage loop that keeps tutoring focused on the English skills you are actually struggling with, not just essay volume.

01

Diagnose

Identify the analytical, structural and essay skills that are actually holding the grade back, so time goes where it matters.

02

Teach

Build close analysis and constructed argument, so you can explain how meaning is created rather than only describe what a text says.

03

Practice

Move from guided analysis to timed, exam-style responses, building a clear line of argument supported by precise evidence.

04

Measure

Review responses and track which skills remain inconsistent, then shift focus as strengths and weaknesses change.

Exam Preparation

IB English Exam Preparation

Practical preparation for IB English assessments, focused on the habits that turn analysis into marks — without reducing writing to a formula.

Practise timed writing so planning and analysis happen under pressure
Plan before writing so each response has a clear line of argument
Strengthen close textual analysis of unseen and studied texts
Select evidence precisely rather than quoting at length
Build a clear line of argument that runs through the whole response
Construct paragraphs that develop analysis rather than list points
Edit and review previous responses to spot recurring habits
Learn from feedback so the next response improves on the last
Individual Oral

IB English Individual Oral Support

The Individual Oral is a chance to show how a global issue plays out across texts. Tutoring helps you prepare it well, while keeping the work your own.

For the IB English Individual Oral, our role is to guide rather than to produce. We help you understand what the assessment is asking and prepare your oral to a high standard.

That includes:

  • Selecting and refining a global issue
  • Selecting textual evidence
  • Developing analysis rather than description
  • Structuring the oral effectively
  • Practising delivery
  • Receiving and acting on feedback

Students retain responsibility for their own assessed work. We do not write or produce the oral for you; the guidance is there to help you produce your best honest work.

Who This Is For

IB English Tutoring for Every Starting Point

The same 1-to-1 structure serves very different students, because the focus shifts to match where each one is starting from.

Need to Catch Up

For students who have fallen behind, the focus is on building close analysis and the essay foundations that later assessments depend on.

Building Toward a 6

For students who can analyse but lose marks through structure and evidence, the focus is on line of argument and exam technique.

Targeting a 7

For students aiming at the top grade, the focus is on precision, original argument and the sophistication that separates a 6 from a 7.

Already Performing Strongly

For high-performing students who want to address specific weaknesses and maximise consistency across the assessment components.

Experienced IB English Tutors

Our tutors bring substantial teaching experience, with many having 5-10+ years of experience, and work with students 1-to-1 on the specific course and level each student is studying.

Tutors are selected based on subject expertise, teaching ability, curriculum familiarity and experience supporting students through the course and its assessments.

Students are matched based on their course, level, goals and specific needs, so the person teaching you is suited to what you are studying and where you want to get to.
